Drawing for Survival Piece #5

1

This drawing documents the original installation of Portable Orchard, which was commissioned by the Art Gallery at California State University, Fullerton, and sized to fit that space. It includes instructions for building the hexagonal planters and corresponding light boxes; a list of tree species, such as Eureka lemon and Minneola tangelo; and recipes for “Helen Harrison’s Citrus Board for 300,” a feast inspired by fruits from the expected yield. In the drawing, the eighteen planters are systematically ordered in a layout that echoes the rows of a conventional citrus grove as well as the aesthetics of the modernist grid. Combining technical specifications with lively notes and tips for future users, the drawing’s “do-it-yourself” ethos captures the Harrisons’ desire for their works to serve as blueprints for future iterations of the installation.
